Accessing Electronic Resources via the VPN

VPN: Set-up Your Computer to Access Library Resources Off-Campus

The primary method for accessing the library's electronic material (electronic journals, e-books, article collections, etc.) off the Logan campus is by setting up your computer to connect to the University VPN server.

What is the VPN? VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. It is a server run by the Utah State University IT department. When you connect to the VPN from your computer, to the outside world it looks like your computer is on campus. Since computers on campus are authorized to access all the library's electronic subscriptions, you have access to all the resources as if you were using a computer in the library.

Instructions can be found on the library website for configuring the VPN.

Windows XP or Vista

If you have Windows XP or Vista, download a program from the IT website to automatically configure your computer for connecting to the VPN. Instructions are also available via this link.

Problems with above file? You can also manually configure your computer to connect to the VPN server:

Trouble with the VPN?

Trouble with the VPN?

  1. Contact the USU Help Desk (via telephone, in person, or chat)
  2. Contact the Electronic Resources Librarian: trevor.alvord@usu.edu, 435-797-0668 or via electronic form.
  3. Try EZ Proxy.

Your computer may have a firewall installed that prevents the VPN from being installed.  Please contact your system administrator. The USU Library is currently working on implementing another authentication system that will provide access to library resources remotely.  Until that is up we apologize for any inconvenience.

EZ Proxy: New Option for Off-Campus Access to Library Resources

While the VPN will remain as the primary method for off-campus access, we are setting up an alternate system ("EZ Proxy") for those of you who are not able to connect via the VPN. We hope this system will be ready in the Fall 09 semester.

If you would like to be notified when this sytem is ready, please send an e-mail to library.help@usu.edu.
