Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery: Requesting Materials

This is a guide to the services offered by the Resource Sharing and Document Delivery Unit for Current Utah Sate Universty, Students and Faculty

ILLiad

ILLiad is the system for requesting research materials such as books, book chapters, or articles through interlibrary loan.

Logon to ILLiad to place your order.

How long does it take?

Although most articles arrive within 48 hours, and books arrive within 7 days, there are several factors to consider which may affect how long it takes for you to receive your request:

  • Format (Can the document be sent electronically or does the item have to be shipped?)
  • Availability (How many other libraries have the article or loan requested?)
  • Staff (Are staff available at our partner libraries to process your item?)

Requesting Materials

What Can I Request?

  • Books and book chapters (note: if you need more than one chapter from a book, please borrow entire book)
  • Books owned at USU that are checked out (depending on popularity, may not be available from other libraries)
  • Theses and dissertations (check Digital Dissertations first--materials available online, will not be ordered from another library)
  • Musical scores
  • Conference proceedings
  • Microfilmed newspapers
  • Photocopies of journal articles may be requested in accordance with copyright law
  • Items missing from USU Libraries may be obtained after you have placed a search for the item with the Circulation Department

Items you’re welcome to request but we’re often unsuccessful in obtaining:

  • Entire issues of bound journals, especially those published in the last five years
  • Audiovisual materials (AV), including videos, which are only lent to us by a limited number of libraries
    • Patrons are limited to five AV requests at one time
    • Request AV materials using the "Request a book form"
    • AV materials must support USU teaching/research, please see your local public library or subscription service (Netflix, Amazon, etc.) for your personal viewing needs.

Items Not Available via Interlibrary Loan

USU Interlibrary Loan does not supply:

  • Textbooks
  • Course reserves materials
  • Genealogical research materials
  • E-Books
  • Streaming audio and visual materials, such as MP3 files
  • Computer games or other software
  • Psychological tests
  • Any material which prohibits Interlibrary Loan (certain publishers, licensed play scripts, etc.)
  • Material that does not support USU research and/or teaching

If you need materials not related to your education or work at USU, contact local public library to see if they can assist you with their interlibrary loan services.

USU Eastern Price & Blanding

Materials located at USU Eastern and USU Blanding Libraries are included in USU's online catalog. We can't get materials from those locations, but can request them from other libraries in the United States.

Place requests for those items in ILLiad.
