Search alert: automatically re-run searches in databases to find out if any new material matches your search criteria.
Citation alert: from Web of Science database, receive an alert when a scholarly paper is published which cites a specific article you have selected.

Databases: many article databases provide a method for requesting journal Table of Contents alerts or saving your searches and requesting the database re-run the searches at a specified interval (daily, weekly, monthly) and sending you the results for any recently added materials that match your search criteria.

Journal websites: many journal publishers offer e-mail or RSS Table of Contents alerts for each new issue of a journal. This is a free service, and you can sign up to receive alerts directly on the journal website.
