Sample Projects for Small to Medium-Sized Classes

The following activities are designed for classes with fewer than 100 students, or classes in which TAs can assist in grading written work.

1. Finding and Writing Reviews
First have students find a review of an exhibit, performance or other creative work. Have them summarize the key points of the review. Then have them write a review of a creative work.

2. Creating and Reviewing Online Exhibits

Using the personal folder feature in ArtStor, have students create an online "exhibit."

Adaptation: Have another student review that exhibit. Can be combined with the Finding and Writing Reviews example above.

Projects and Activities for Larger Classes

The following activities are designed for classes with more than 100 students.

1. Short Written Assignments
Adapt the Finding and Writing Reviews assignment, but stagger the due dates throughout the semester to make grading easier.

2. Electronic Bulletin Board Posts
Adapt the Finding and Writing Reviews assignment for an electronic discussion board, via Blackboard, for example. Stagger the postings so smaller groups of students are working at different times. Have students summarize the review that they found and then respond to another student's summary, noting similarities and differences in what the reviewer noted about the art work or performance. Note that students do need feedback on these assignments, or they seem like busy work. It would be useful to incorporate some of the student posts into lectures, for example, so that students can see that what they find can inform the entire class.
