Research Papers, Presentations, and Short Written Assignments

  • Research Paper: Using Primary and Secondary Sources  
      
    A good example of a research paper that focuses on the introductory goal of breadth general education classes and specific scaffolding throughout the assignment.
  • Finding and Writing Reviews (no link)  
      
    First have students find a review of an exhibit, performance or other creative work. Have them summarize the key points of the review. Then have them write a review of a creative work.
  • Finding the Best Article  
      
    Students find and write an annotation of an article on related to a topic determined by the class. They evaluate the article based on criteria developed by consensus in class.

Real World Applications

  • Creating a Brochure  
      
    A good example of how to use research and scholarly sources to summarize information and create a "real world" product.
  • Create an Online Exhibit (no link)  
      
    Using the personal folder feature in ArtStor, have students create an online "exhibit." Have another student review that exhibit. Can be combined with the Finding and Writing Reviews example above.

  • Islamic History and the News

    Students find a news story related to Islam and, applying their new knowledge

  • Nailing the Issue  
      
    Created for ANTH 2010 by David Lancy

    Students take a recent issue in the news and analyze the central issue, cutting away the rhetoric and getting at the heart of the issue, based on their new knowledge from class and their own research
  • Dissecting Editorials  
      
    Students find an editorial about an issue related to class and dissect it, looking for claims and identifying issues that might be clarified by research in the scholarly literature.

  • Compare Science Writing

Class Discussion Ideas

  • Making Connections between Lectures and Scholarly Literature  
      
    Have students find one scholarly article related to something from your lecture. Encourage students to find something that challenges, or offers an alternative explanation.
