Using EndNote

Overview

  • Within an EndNote library, references can be sorted, edited, annotated, and reformatted in different citation styles (e.g. APA, Chicago, MLA, etc.)
  • Citations can be imported from databases or they can be entered into EndNote manually.
  • You can search some databases directly from within EndNote.
  • The Cite While You Write plug-in enables you to automatically enter citations in a Microsoft Word document and generate a reference list.
  • You can purchase EndNote from the USU Bookstore or online for approximately $100.

Create a New EndNote Library

  1. If you are using EndNote for the first time, click the Create a new library button.

  2. Choose the location where you want to save your new library. You can create an EndNote folder on your hard drive using the New Folder Icon.

  3. Enter a name for the new library and click Save.
  4. Your new library will open. Note: If the EndNote program is already open, click File on the menu bar and choose New

Importing Citations Directly

Note: These instructions apply to most library databases. Specific databases may vary slightly; please see the Importing Citations tab on the EndNote guide or contact your subject librarian if you run into any problems.

  1. Conduct a search in the database and mark the records you want to import into EndNote.

  2. Look for a link titled something like Export to Reference Software, Print/Email/Save, EndNote, or Bibligraphic Manager. You might need to view the full record for a citation or view all the records you have selected.

  3. EndNote will open, if the program is not already open. If the export plug-in opens (when using the Firefox browser), click OK.
  4. The references will be imported into whichever EndNote library is open or was open the last time you used EndNote.
    Note:
only the newly imported references will appear in your library. To see all of your records, click References on the menu bar and choose Show all references.

Importing with Filters
