EndNote: Creating Bibliographies

Creating a bibliography

To create a bibliography in EndNote Basic (Web), first make sure that the references you wish to cite are in a single group. Then, navigate to Format -- Bibliography and select the reference group you wish to format, your citation style, and your desired file format.

Format bibliography in EndNote Basic (Web)

To create a bibliography in EndNote Desktop, select the references you wish to cite using the command or control key. Select File -- Export, and select the file name, location, file type, and output style for your references.

EndNote Desktop export menu

If you use the Cite While You Write Word plugin, a bibliography will be automatically generated when you place in-text citations. For more help, see the Cite While You Write tab of this guide.

Specialized citation styles

There are over 6,000 citation styles available for EndNote. If the style you need is not included in EndNote Desktop, search for and download it from the EndNote output styles library.

You can also build custom styles from scratch or, more efficiently, modify a style close to the one you need.
