Concurrent Research Foundations: Canvas Course

This guide includes instructions for incorporating USU Libraries’ Research Foundations Canvas course to strengthen students’ information literacy and research skills.

Course Overview

USU Libraries' Research Foundations is a self-paced Canvas course that helps students build core research skills, such as developing a research question, finding and evaluating sources, and organizing information.

The course is modular and flexible. Once enrolled, students can complete individual instructor-assigned modules or work through the full course. Each module earns a shareable digital badge as proof of completion.

How to Use Course

Follow the steps below to encourage student engagement with the Research Foundations course.

Step 1

Share this self-enrollment link with students to give them access to the course: https://usu.instructure.com/enroll/3FA4AX

Step 2

Choose the modules that best support your course goals (see list of modules and learning outcomes below) and create a Canvas assignment directing students to complete each specific module.

Step 3

Ask students to submit the link to the badge they earn for proof of completion. Students receive a verifiable digital badge for each module they finish. Each badge includes a unique URL they can share or submit in Canvas.

Course Content

Modules include multiple pages with quick checks on each page to assess student learning. Some modules end with a quiz that requires a 100% score to earn the badge—students have unlimited attempts. Others require an assignment submission for badge completion. Each module ends with an optional feedback survey to help us improve the course.
