Ever find an article but for some reason you can't access the full text? If so then this guide is here to help walk you through getting access!

Finding Peer Reviewed Articles

Choose a Relevant Database

1. Begin by selecting a database from the library databases.

2. You can search databases by title, in the top right corner next to the search bar, or subject.


Begin Your Search

Some databases will let you limit to peer review before you start a search. Check for a Peer reviewed checkbox and then enter your keywords and click Search.

In other databases, you'll need to first enter some keywords for your topic and then click Search. You'll then have an option to filter the results to show only peer reviewed sources on the next screen.


Limit Results to Peer Review

1. Most databases have a Refine Results section, often on the left side of the results page.

2. Look for a checkbox for Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals or Peer Reviewed.

3. Your search should automatically update.


Determine if Articles are Peer-Reviewed

Finding Peer-Review Statuses in Ulrichs

  1. From the library home page, click Articles and Databases below Find

  2. In the alphabetic list, click U to access Ulrich's Directory.

  3. Scroll and click Ulrich's Periodical Directory.

  4. The search box is located in the middle of your screen. For best results, click the Advanced Search link under the search box. Enter the title of the magazine or journal in the search box and click Search.See above info
  5. Locate the journal you are looking for in the list, if more than one title is listed. If the journal is peer-reviewed, you will see a peer-review icon, which is supposed to be a referee's shirt. This indicates the journal is peer-reviewed.

  6. For more information, click the title you are looking for. On the following page, you will see a list of criteria about the journal. Look for Content Type and see if this shows Academic/Scholarly and see if there is a line that states Referred - Yes. This designated that the journal is peer-reviewed.

  7. Non peer-reviewed or scholarly journals

If a journal or magazine is not peer-reviewed, you will see the Content Type listed as Newspapers/Trade, Directory, etc.
