Open Educational Resources (OER): OER Grant Program

Open educational resources are openly-licensed educational materials without cost or access barriers.

USU OER Grant

The USU Libraries’ OER Grant Program supports instructors in adopting, adapting, or creating open educational resources that reduce costs and improve access for students. Whether you are looking to revise an existing OER, develop new learning materials, or simply adopt a freely available resource, the program offers flexible funding options to support a wide range of projects.

This grant program is part of USU Libraries’ commitment to inclusive, student-centered learning. It encourages innovative teaching practices, collaborative development with students, and the creation of sustainable, shareable educational content.

OER Grant Categories

USU’s OER grants are structured around five categories, each designed to meet different instructional needs. Faculty are encouraged to select the category that best aligns with their project goals:

  • Maintenance ($1,000): For updating an existing OER with minor revisions to ensure content remains accurate and up to date. The OER must fully replace paid course materials.

  • As-is Adoption ($1,000): For adopting an existing OER with no major changes. The OER must be used as the primary course material, replacing any commercial resources.

  • Creating Ancillary Materials ($3,000): For developing supplemental resources (e.g., test banks, slides, lab manuals, syllabi) that enhance the instructional value of an existing OER.

  • Revise/Remix ($3,000): For significantly modifying or combining existing OER to better meet course objectives and student needs.

  • Authoring a New OER ($5,000): For creating a completely new OER to replace traditional materials. Collaborative projects that involve students in authorship are especially encouraged.

Each grant application will be evaluated using a scoring rubric that considers feasibility, pedagogical innovation, student impact, and sustainability
