The History of USU's commitment to OER

Utah State University has been a leader in advancing Open Educational Resources (OER), promoting access, affordability, and innovation in teaching and learning through grants and technical support for students and faculty. Over the years, our commitment to OER has saved students millions of dollars and empowered faculty to design more flexible, student-centered courses.

The impact of OER on students and faculty at USU has been immense.

  •  Courses Taught Using OER: 3,898

  • Students Enrolled in OER Courses: 71,740

  • Total Faculty Who Have Used OER for Their Courses: 418

  • Approximate Total Savings for Students: $5.82 million

  • Average Semesterly Savings: $290,238

The impact of OER at USU has continued to grow over time. In 2024 alone, USU saw:

  •  Students Enrolled in OER Courses: 11,169

  • Instructors Using OER in Their Courses: 102

USU Publishing and OER Content Creation

USU has supported OER creation by instructors through platforms like Pressbooks and CanvasCommons

  • Books Published in the Last 3 Years: 7

  • Textbooks on USU Digital Commons: 12

  • Open Courseware Modules Available: 11

    • Subjects include engineering, theatre arts, psychology, human development, and more
